VNUS Closure is a new, minimally invasive procedure for patients with varicose veins who have reflux in the main superficial vein running from the groin to the inside of the ankle, which is called the long saphenous vein.  A duplex ultrasound will confirm the reflux and also that the anatomy of the vein is suitable for the VNUS closure technique.

Instead of an incision in the groin and stripping of the vein, a thin catheter is passed into the vein at the ankle.  This catheter is positioned at the beginning of the long saphenous vein under ultrasound control.  Radiofrequency energy is delivered down the catheter as it is slowly drawn back down the vein.  This causes the vein to heat, collapse and seal shut thus preventing reflux in the vein.

Removal of the unsightly visible varicose veins is done as usual using small stab incisions and special vein hook.

The advantage of the VNUS Closure technique is that the recovery from the operation is much quicker and most patients return to normal activities and even to work within 1-2 days compared with 1-2 weeks for conventional surgery.
